Provenance
Christian Ludwig August Stukenbrok (1867-1930)
The entrepreneur, innovator and bon vivant enjoyed (almost worldwide) fame thanks to his ingenious and revolutionary advertising strategy, developing from a modest beginning in 1890 into Germany's first and at the time most important mail-order house with an annual turnover of over 6 million marks, offering an enormous range of consumer and luxury goods: delivery against payment took place within only one day after reception of the order!
August Stukenbrok moved in 1888 to Einbeck, an idyllic small town south of Hamburg, Germany, and opened in 1890 a ground-breaking bicycle firm "August Stukenbrok Einbeck (ASTE) which sold directly to the final consumer via an ingenious mail-order system.
With the ever-growing success of his firm, the consequently ever-growing selection of items offered and the especially ever-growing size of the catalogues, August Stukenbrok published, in addition to the main editions , special catalogues for a number of categories, notably watches. His 1912 "Uhren, Gold, Silberwaren, Ausgabe F" (watches, gold and silver ware, edition F) comprised 104 pages of "first class watches as well as gold and silver goods".
Studenbrok's catalogues were distributed free of charge to his clients, sent in over 1 million examples every year from Einbeck to all parts of Germany. August Stukenbrok's catalogues, considered cultural-historical sources, and their impressive sizes and selection of items offered are paradigms of mail-order catalogues still in use today.
The councillor of commerce August Stukenbrok, highly honoured and awarded, passed away in 1930 at the age of 63, leaving behind is daughter Hertha, born in Einbeck in 1902, and his wife Johanne Wilhelmine Ernestine Dorette, born Ecke. Victim of the great depression following the 1929 Stock Market Crash, his firm ceased all activities in 1931.
